The lychee
This is an Asian specie that has adapted very well to the environmental conditions of the Costa Tropical and may be a new option for growing more extensively on our coast, at the moment it only occupies a symbolic area usually as a home grown crop. The lychee is from the south of China. This fruit has the advantage of being in high demand in Europe, both by the Asian community and by locals that are showing great interest in this type of exotic fruits. The fruit of the Lychee is between 3 to 4 centimeters in diameter and weighs approximately 20 grams. It is red in colour, or sometimes yellow, is covered in bumps and its flesh is glassy white or cream and very juicy. It is very sweet and has an exotic flavour, reminding us of grapes with a certain scent of roses.
The carambola
This exotic fruit is highly sought-after on the international markets, commonly known as "star fruit". Shape: it has a very curious shape, oval, elongated, with five points and the cut fruit resembles a 5-point star. It is widely used in the restaurant industry due to its ornamental character for decorating dishes. Its size ranges from 7 to 12 centimeters long. It has a thin, lustrous and edible skin, and its colour can range from green or golden and orangey-yellow when it is ripe. The flesh is crispy, with a smooth texture and is glassy-yellow, with few or no seeds, juicy and with a fine bittersweet taste. The larger carambola fruits are tastier and sweeter than the smaller ones, with a more bittersweet taste.
The Guava
It comes from Central America, however it is cultivated in almost all tropical countries. Depending on the variety, guavas can be rounded like a lemon or narrow toward the stem, similar in shape to a pear. The first layer of flesh under the skin is consistent and firm, about 0,25 centimeters thick, variable according to the type of guava. The inside is softer, juicy, creamy and full of hard woody seeds. The fruit is about 4-12 centimeters long and 4-7 cm in diameter and can weigh from 60 to 500 grams. The skin is yellowish-green tending to go slightly orangey when ripe. The taste of the flesh reminds us of walnuts and hazelnuts, giving off a strong aroma. Notably, its vitamin C content is up to seven times that of an orange and it can be consumed fresh or in milk shakes.
