This beach is linked to the legend of the appearance of the Virgen de la Cabeza, Patron Saint of Motril. It is allegedly said that the statue was part of the goods of a galleon that was sailing on the waters near the coast of Motril in the early 16th Century. According to some sources, she was stolen in the island of Corinth by Portuguese sailors. Caught by a sudden, violent storm that threatened to sink the ship, they prostrated and prayed for the intercession of the Blessed Virgin and the storm dissipated. However, when the sailors decided to resume their course, heavy rain, huge storms and strong swells restarted. This was seen as a manifestation of the will of the Virgin to stay in that sacred place.  Therefore, they endorsed the divine will and decided to build a chapel so that she could be venerated by everyone.  Finally, the storm dissipated and huge number of madonna lilies - Spanish name for “azucenas” and hence its name - started to flower. After she was moved to the town, on the top of a hill, a hermitage was built on the ruins of a Muslim castle which supposedly served as a residence for Boabdil’s mother, the last Muslim king of Granada.
